The Straight Line

Every sale is the same. One line, open to close. Two jobs every second: build certainty and keep the line. Control is not pressure — it is navigation.

The Line

SL-01

Open to close in six stations. The prospect will pull off the line — stories, tangents, objections. You may leave it to gather intelligence or rapport; you steer every departure back.

OFF THE LINE OFF THE LINE a b OPEN CLOSE 1 2 3 4 5 6 THE OPENING INTELLIGENCE THE PITCH THE CLOSE THE LOOPS TRUST CLOSE four seconds · yourself once, the company twice three questions · seven targets · no pitch yet built from his answers · under two minutes “sound fair enough?” · cal.com while he’s on the phone deflect · rebuild · re-close · never argue fires at 8–9 · sells the relationship, not the transaction OFF THE LINE — STORIES · TANGENTS · OBJECTIONS OFF THE LINE — EVERY DEPARTURE STEERED BACK a b OPEN CLOSE 1 2 3 4 5 6 THE OPENING INTELLIGENCE THE PITCH THE CLOSE THE LOOPS TRUST CLOSE four secondsyourself once, the company twice three questions, seven targetsno pitch yet built from his answersunder two minutes “sound fair enough?”cal.com while he’s on the phone deflect · rebuild · re-closenever argue fires at 8–9 · sells therelationship, not the transaction

a he wanders — stories, tangents. Free intelligence; let him talk.   b objections — a certainty reading, never a “no.” The steer-back: “That’s great — now, as far as [the thread] goes…”

always: build certainty
always: keep the line

The Three Tens

SL-02

Three dials, each 1–10. The sale happens at 10 / 10 / 10. Every sentence on the call either raises a dial or wastes air.

10 1 10

The Product

Logic — facts, numbers, mechanism. It makes sense.
Emotion — future-paced. It feels right.
10 1 10

You

Logic — sharp, prepared, an authority.
Emotion — “I pride myself on doing right by my clients.”
10 1 10

The Company

Logic — standards, ethics, everything on paper.
Emotion — a firm worth staying with for ten years.

Logic first, then emotion. Logic convinces; emotion moves.

The Five Loops

SL-03

Every loop: deflect → rebuild → re-close. Never argue — an objection tells you which dial is low. Loops 1–3 rebuild the three tens; 4 and 5 move his thresholds.

1

Rebuild the Product → 10

“Does the idea make sense to you? Do you like the idea?” — re-sell the system: every leak priced, two numbers on paper.

2

Rebuild You → 10

“You haven’t worked with me personally before…” — the pride pattern.

3

Rebuild the Company → 10

“And as far as BlackRain goes…” — standards, ethics, everything measured and on paper.

Trust Close fires here — between loops 3 and 4, when he’s warm at an 8 or 9. The relationship beats the mechanics.
4

Lower the Action Threshold — how certain he must be before he acts. It is malleable.

“What’s the worst that can happen? It’s nine ninety-nine, it credits in full, and I’m with you every step.” Levers: the credit · hold-your-hand · the worst-case walk · the down-shift (free fifteen minutes).

his bar lowered
5

Raise the Pain Threshold — when certainty is high and he still won’t move.

“You told me yourself — [his pain, his words]. Where does that sit in five years if nothing changes?” Future-pace the negative. People in pain act. Then one last close.

today five years
After five — let it go “Then we’ll part here, with my regards. When the day comes, you have my name.”

Loop backwards: replay the beat he was most certain at — his “yeah, that’s true” moment — raise the low dial, re-close. Then back to the calendar.

The First Four Seconds

SL-04
WON OR LOST HERE 0s1s2s 3s4s
01

Sharp as a tack

Every word crisp. Nothing computed live — it’s all on paper before the dial.

02

Enthusiastic as hell

Up-tone, alive. Energy he can hear through the handset.

03

An expert

An authority in the field from word one. Carried entirely by tonality and words.

Yourself once. The company twice. Blow the window and you spend the whole call climbing out of the hole.

The Instruments

SL-05

Intelligence — seven targets · gathered while building rapport, one motion

  1. 1Needs — what’s actually broken
  2. 2Core beliefs — what blocks buying
  3. 3Past experiences — “has anybody been calling you about AI?”
  4. 4Value perception — what he thinks it should cost
  5. 5Financial standards — what he’s used to spending
  6. 6His pains — amplify, don’t resolve
  7. 7Financial availability — can he write the check

Disqualify: enthusiasm stuck under 3 — end it clean. Volume is the cure. “Next.”

Tonality — by station

L1Enthusiastic & Warm Reasonable Man
L2“I Care” low pitch, leaning in
L3Absolute Certainty Sharp as a Tack Authority paint the movie
L4Reasonable Man
L5“I Care” Absolute Certainty Sincere Ultimate Reasonable Man
L6Sincere conviction whispering scarcity then SILENCE

Your state first: the 8:10 rep, posture up, open rehearsed aloud. Match him one notch above, then lead.

Future pacehe sees himself six months out
EVERY SENTENCE MOVES HIM RIGHT 123 456 789 10 ACTION THRESHOLD malleable — pull it left THE SALE stuck under 3 → “Next.”

The pitch sequence · L3, formalized — never front-loaded; something big always in reserve

Name it benefits, matched to HIS needs “does that make sense?” more benefits “you with me?” honest urgency make it easy — credit in full direct close

Dashed stops are micro-yeses — each one a rung of certainty. Written for the ear; no clause a tongue trips on at 9am.
